history

The State Mint is the national Romanian mint, it is based at Bucharest and produces the circulation coin of Romania.
Working since 1935 in the present headquarters from the Filaret hill, the Mint was set up in 1870, three years after the monetary system of the “Leu” was established.
Since 1956 the Mint was subordinated to the National Bank of Romania and in 1990 it was reorganized as an autonomous administration.
Though a state own enterprise, the Mint is financial independent, doesn’t receive subventions and its aim is the same as the one of any private own company: the profit.
A nine members Board of Directors leads the Mint. The President of the Board is the General Manager of the company.
Apart from circulation coins, the Mint produces commemorative coins, medals, decorations, gold and silver items, and other countless items made using the specific mint’s technology as: badges, trinkets, sportive medals, seals, engraved or pressed galvanic coated or enameled objects etc.
During the last years, a significant part of the mint’s production was delivered to some foreign clients. Mainly circulation, commemorative and uncirculated coins but also medals and trinkets were exported to: Great Britain, Germany, Holland, Israel, Sweden, Moldova and Hong Kong.
The quality system of the State Mint was reconfirmed in 2002 by the Supervising, Accreditation and Certification Commission of the Romanian Ministry of the Interior, according to SR EN ISO 9002.
